This is a short tour to discover the magic and mystery of Bhutan, covering the rich sights of Paro and Thimphu and taking in the amazing fortified monastic dzongs of Wangdue and Punakha. We have included the beautiful valley of Gangtey, famous for the migrant black-necked crane, and an excellent base for walks. The accommodation is comfortable but shorn of trappings of luxury.

Days 1, 2 Thimpu
Fly to Paro, transfer to Thimphu, stay at Kisa or Jumolhari Hotel for two nights (or at the Taj Thimpu). Visit the sights including the King's Memorial, the Painting School, the Handicrafts Emporium.

Days 3, 4 Gangtey
Drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088 meters) - on a clear day one can see Gangkar Puensum - the highest peak in Bhutan (7,497meters) - and carry on to Wangduephodrang; visit the magnificent Dzong, continue to Gangtey (Phobjika Valley) for two nights at Dewachen Resort or the Farm House, comfortable accommodation but with no electricity; the valley is winter habitat for Black Necked Cranes that migrate from Central Asiatic plateau; at leisure.

Day 5 Punakha
Drive to Punakha for a night at the Puna Tshangchu or Damchen Resort; optional excursion to Chimi Lhakhang, the 'Divine Madman' monastery is a half-hour walk from the road. Visit the beautiful Punakha Dzong - built at the confluence of two rivers.

Days 6, 7 Paro
Drive back to Paro, stay at the Jakar Village or The Village Lodge for two nights (or Uma Paro). Visit Ta Dzong, now housing the National Museum, the Rinpung Dzong and the f amous Taktsang Monastery or "Tiger's Nest", precariously r esting on a hillside - it is an arduous climb.

Day 8 Return
Fly back to Kolkata, Delhi, Kathmandu or Bangkok.
